The PT-181 DDC training unit is virtually a “building-in-a-box” as it contains many of the most common BACnet discoverable devices in today’s green buildings. Students will benefit from a hands-on experience with many different components as well as an introduction to the concepts of direct digital controls (DDC) and building automation systems (BAS) with a focus on HVAC controls.
Instead of running around to test and touch each component, students are introduced to DDC and BAS configuration and programming but very limited actual programming is done.
Here are the various components found inside the PT-181 DDC Trainer:
- JENE-MC834 is the “brains and central nervous system” of the trainer. It is a JACE (Java Application Control Engine) controller developed by Tridium. The firmware and software operating system is referred to as the Niagara N4 Framework. The JACE contains a powerful microprocessor, a web server, several network parts and the ability to dock with one or more I/O modules.
- IO-34 is an IO (input-output) module that allows for 10 digital outputs, 8 analog outputs and 16 configurable (universal) inputs. It also has an integral power supply.
- The 5-port ethernet switch allows for “daisy-chaining” of the PT-181s and for connection to the PC-based engineering tool or a standard web browser.
- The pilot relay allows a low voltage, low current signal to “pilot” or control a high voltage or higher current device.
- Status Current Transformer (CT) reads the current flow to the actuator which is converted to a binary state to provide proofing status (on or off) of the actuator.
- The temperature probe is a common 10K thermistor that is used extensively in the HVAC industry.
- The actuator motor (the orange device) provides a 90 degree stroke that is used to control air dampers, water valves and other items. It also provides a position feedback signal.
- Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is used to provide precise speed control to a 3-phase AC motor. It can be controlled by hardwired IO (default) or by a Modbus network signal.
- The serial number tag is used for unit identification and student login.
- The networkable Roof Top Unit (RTU) Controller provides for the normal IO of a standard heat/cool room thermostat. It is a programmable controller that can be configured for a wide range of applications including scheduled occupancy, economizer and humidity control. This device can also be reconfigured to serve as a heat pump unit controller.
- Various different switches, push buttons and displays that are utilized with the training simulator.
