Mike Holloman and Nick Goode, essential members of the tech team at iConnect Training, go over how HVAC instructors can educate future technicians on electrical safety using the TUE-150 Electrical Trainer.
Why Do Instructors Need a TUE-150 Electrical Trainer?
To be successful in the air conditioning business, technicians must master both the mechanical part of HVAC and electrical. Not understanding electricity can put themselves and others in danger. This training unit allows students to learn electrical in a safe environment and master these three concepts:
- Control Voltage
- Low Voltage
- High Voltage
What Is Included in This Electrical Training Unit?
Except refrigeration and air conditioning, this HVAC simulator has everything that a house would have including:
- Low-voltage push button doorbell with a transformer
- Key switch for instructors to change voltage with a light to indicate low or high voltage – great safety feature!
- Two standard duplex receptacles with a ground fault interrupter (GFI) duplex which are standard by any wet environment like a sink or bathtub
- Two lamp circuits that can turn on a 3-way toggle switch
- 3-wire grounding circuit
- Main power switch
- Circuit breaker panel
- 15-amp breaker feeds a standard 15-amp duplex receptacle
- 20-amp breaker feeds 20-amp GFCI which also has another 20-amp duplex that’s protected by another GFCI with multiple GFCIi outlets further downstream
- 15-amp circuit feeds 3-way switches that go to each lampholder
- 15-amp breaker feeds to a transformer for both front and rear low-voltage doorbells
- Conduits
- Flexible metal conduits
- Box connectors
- EMT with different types of box connectors
- Flexible non-metal conduits
- Box connectors
What Lessons Can I Teach with the TUE-150 Training Unit?
The first lessons should be taught using the low-voltage level until the student can correctly wire it and is comfortable with electricity. Once those systems have been proven to be correctly wired, then the instructor can move onto the next lesson by simply flipping the switch to high voltage.
Another great lesson is on demystifying the 3-way switches. Students can wire up the trainer and learn just how it works. Instructors can also demonstrate parallel in-series circuits.
