As HVAC/R instructors prepare for the upcoming school year, the lab deserves just as much attention as the lesson plan. A clean, organized lab is important, but readiness goes beyond having tools put away and equipment plugged in.
The bigger question is whether the lab gives students enough opportunity to practice the skills they will need in the field.
Before students return, instructors can use the start of the school year as a chance to evaluate what is working, what is missing, and where students may need more hands-on experience.
Start With the Skills Students Need Most
A strong lab begins with clear training goals. Instructors can start by reviewing the skills students are expected to develop throughout the year. That may include electrical troubleshooting, refrigeration fundamentals, gas heating, heat pumps, controls, airflow, diagnostics, and system operation.
It also helps to consider what local employers are asking for. If technicians entering the field are expected to understand mini-splits, inverter systems, control wiring, or advanced troubleshooting, the lab should give students exposure to those areas before graduation.
Look at Where Students Need More Hands-On Time
One of the easiest ways to spot a lab gap is to look at where students spend the least amount of time working directly with equipment.
Are students getting enough practice wiring controls? Can they follow a sequence of operation from start to finish? Do they have opportunities to measure pressures, temperatures, voltage, and amperage? Are they diagnosing problems, or are they mostly watching demonstrations?
When only a few students can work on a system at one time, valuable lab time can turn into waiting time. Smaller training stations, table top units, and dedicated control trainers can help give more students direct access to the equipment and concepts being taught.
Review Where Students Struggled Last Year
Past challenges can point to future improvements. If students struggled with wiring diagrams, control circuits, troubleshooting steps, or understanding how components interact, those areas may need more lab support.
This does not always mean a full lab overhaul is needed. Sometimes, adding one focused training unit or creating more structured lab activities can make a big difference. The goal is to give students repeated practice with the concepts that are hardest to understand from lecture alone.
Check for Outdated or Limited Training Scenarios
HVAC/R technology continues to change, and training labs need to keep pace. Many programs already have strong foundational equipment, but students may also need exposure to newer systems and components.
Instructors may want to review whether their lab includes opportunities to teach topics such as mini-splits, heat pumps, inverter technology, electronic expansion valves, updated controls, and low-GWP refrigerant awareness.
Students do not need to master every system before entering the field, but they should have enough exposure to build confidence and recognize what they are seeing on the job.
Make Sure the Lab Supports Troubleshooting
A strong HVAC/R lab should do more than show students how a system works. It should help them learn how to think through problems.
That means students need opportunities to test, measure, compare readings, follow symptoms, and make decisions. Troubleshooting builds confidence because it teaches students how to move from “something is wrong” to “here is what I need to check next.”
Plan Updates Before the Year Gets Busy
Once the school year begins, schedules fill quickly. Reviewing lab needs early gives instructors time to identify priorities, request quotes, align purchases with funding, and prepare equipment before students need it.
For the upcoming school year, lab readiness is about more than checking boxes. It is about making sure students have the tools, systems, and hands-on practice they need to connect classroom theory with real HVAC/R work.
